BRAMPTON AND BRAMPTON

Why Brampton doctors can simply drop by

Brampton is the one city where we are the local accountant. Our office at 181 Queen St E, Unit 5 is about five minutes from Peel Memorial and roughly fifteen from Brampton Civic Hospital on Bovaird Drive, both run by William Osler Health System. If you would rather hand over a box of statements than upload them, you can book a time and walk in.

Medicine in Brampton runs heavily through walk-in and family practice clinics spread along Queen Street, Bovaird, Sandalwood, Steeles and the plazas of Springdale and Castlemore. Many clinics are owned by one or two physicians, with other doctors working there on a percentage of their billings. That arrangement is where most of the tax questions we hear in Brampton begin, for the owner and for the doctors who work there.

Plenty of Brampton physicians also split the week between a clinic and hospital shifts at Brampton Civic or Etobicoke General, and some own the unit their clinic sits in. Each piece is manageable alone. Put together, they need one person who sees the whole picture each year before 31 December, which is the job we do.

What we see most often

A busy Brampton clinic can bill well and still leave its owner unsure what the corporation actually earned.

Four common problems, and what we do about each one.

  1. The problem

You own the clinic and other doctors pay you a share.

When associate physicians pay a percentage of their billings for the room, the staff and the billing work, that income has to be recorded properly, and depending on the agreement it may need HST charged on it. Many owners only find this out when the CRA asks.

    The solution

    The arrangement checked and recorded

We read the agreement, tell you whether HST applies, and record each doctor's share every month so the owner's corporation shows its true income.

  2. The problem

You work in someone else's clinic.

Associate doctors often see only what is left after the clinic's cut. Without the clinic's monthly statement matched to OHIP remittance advice, it is hard to know whether the split was applied correctly or what you can deduct.

    The solution

Your billings and the split reconciled

We match OHIP statements to the clinic's reports and your deposits, so your T2 starts from billings you can trace.

  3. The problem

    Clinic days plus hospital shifts.

Income from Brampton Civic or another hospital can come through a mix of OHIP billings, stipends and sometimes a T4, while clinic income flows into the corporation. Instalments and the pay plan get missed when nobody looks at both.

    The solution

    One pay plan across both

We plan salary and dividends from the corporation around your hospital income, and set personal instalments so April holds no surprises.

  4. The problem

You own the clinic unit, or want to.

Buying a commercial unit in Brampton raises a real choice: hold it in the medical corporation, in a separate company or personally. Rent paid between your own companies and the passive income rules change what each option costs.

    The solution

The options laid out in writing

We show the yearly tax effect of each option in plain numbers, and work alongside your lawyer before anything is signed.

ANSWERS BEFORE YOU START

Common questions.

General information, not tax advice for your situation. Book 15 minutes to talk about yours.

Can I meet you in person in Brampton?

Yes. Our office is at 181 Queen St E, Unit 5, Brampton ON L6W 3A8. Book a time and come in, or meet us on Teams if that suits your clinic days better.

Is the tax and estate planning session really free?

Yes. There is no cost and no obligation, and the notes are yours to keep whether or not you become a client.

How does the 50% offer work?

Send us your most recent accounting invoice for your corporate year-end, T2 and personal T1. We quote the same services at 50% off that fee, in writing, before you decide. It is for new incorporated doctor clients who sign up by 31 December 2026.

I own a walk-in clinic. Do I charge HST to the doctors who work there?

Sometimes. It depends on what the doctors pay for and how the agreement is written. We read the agreement and give you a plain answer in writing before the next billing cycle.

Can you look after the other doctors in my clinic too?

Yes, each with their own engagement. Every doctor's corporation is kept separate, and nothing about one doctor is shared with another.

Does insurance come up in the session?

Only if you raise it. Chirag also founded WealthPillar Inc. and is licensed to sell life insurance in Ontario. If it comes up, he says so and tells you how he is paid. You never have to buy anything.
