For incorporated IT and tech contractors

Accountant for IT Consultants & Incorporated Contractors

Accounting for an incorporated IT consultant means filing HST on your invoices, choosing how to pay yourself from the corporation and checking you are not treated as a "personal services business", which CRA taxes at a much higher rate. We handle the books and tax for contractors in Brampton and the GTA, including those working through agencies.

What we see most often

Incorporating saves tax only if CRA agrees you are really in business.

Four common problems, and what we do about each one.

  1. The problem

You work for one client like an employee.

If CRA treats your corporation as a personal services business, it loses the small business rate and most expenses.

    The solution

    A contract review

We look at how your work is actually done against the employee tests and explain the risk plainly.

  2. The problem

    HST on invoices is guesswork.

Most contractors must register once revenue passes $30,000. Services to clients outside Canada may be zero-rated, depending on the facts.

    The solution

    HST done right

We check what to charge on each client and file returns on schedule.

  3. The problem

You take money out with no plan.

Shareholder withdrawals that are not salary or dividends can become taxable.

    The solution

    A pay plan

Salary and dividends set up properly, with your personal tax in view.

  4. The problem

    Year-end is a scramble.

Invoices, agency statements and expenses sit in different places.

    The solution

    Books kept current

Monthly bookkeeping so the T2 comes from records that already balance.

ANSWERS BEFORE YOU START

Common questions.

General information, not tax advice for your situation. Book 15 minutes to talk about yours.

Will incorporating lower my tax?

Sometimes, if you keep money in the corporation and your work is truly a business. We show the numbers first.

What is a personal services business?

A corporation whose owner would be an employee of the client if the corporation did not exist. CRA taxes it at a higher rate with limited expenses.

Can you help if I have not filed for a few years?

Yes. We start with the oldest deadlines first and list what is missing.

Do you only work in Brampton?

Our office is at 181 Queen St E, Brampton. We also work with contractors across Ontario on Teams.
