OAKVILLE AND BRAMPTON
Why Oakville owners work with a Brampton firm
Oakville has many established businesses and professionals who incorporated years ago. By now the company often earns more than the owner spends, so money builds up inside it. That is where accounting turns into planning: how much to pay out each year, whether surplus should move to a holding company, and how family members fit in without running into the tax on split income rules.
Incorporated businesses in Oakville tend to fall into a few groups. Doctors and dentists with professional corporations, at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and in clinics across the town. Consultants and IT contractors who bill head offices along the QEW corridor and in Toronto. Trades and renovation contractors working in the older neighbourhoods. Realtors and property investors. And owners who hold investments or rental property inside the company they run.
Our office is at 181 Queen St E, Unit 5, in Brampton. By car it is usually 35 to 45 minutes on the 407 or the 403, depending on traffic, so most Oakville clients never make the trip. We meet on Teams, share files through a secure link, and you deal with the same small team each time. If you would rather meet in person, book a time and we will see you at the Brampton office.
What we see most often
In Oakville, the expensive questions start after the business is already doing well.
Four common problems, and what we do about each one.
- The problem
Too much cash sits in the operating company.
Profit left in the company that runs the business is exposed to its creditors, and large investment balances can cut the small business limit for the next year.
The solutionA holding company, set up with a plan
We look at whether moving surplus to a holding company makes sense for you, what has to happen first, and which steps need your lawyer. Our restructuring page shows it in pictures.
- The problem
Family dividends that the rules catch.
Paying dividends to a spouse or adult children who do not work in the business can fall under the tax on split income rules, which taxes that money at the top personal rate.
The solutionOwner pay planned each year
We look at who actually works in the business, their ages and what they own, and plan salary and dividends within the rules before 31 December.
- The problem
Rental property bought inside the company.
Holding a rental condo or a commercial unit in the operating company mixes investment income with business income and can raise the tax on both.
The solutionA talk before you buy
We set out what holding the property personally, in the company or in a separate company means for tax before you sign.
- The problem
An estate plan that leaves out the company.
Private company shares often make up most of an owner's estate. Without planning, the shares can face tax at death and Ontario estate administration tax on top.
The solutionA one-page estate picture
We map what you own through the company and personally, and give you a plain summary to take to your lawyer for wills and any estate freeze.

ANSWERS BEFORE YOU START
Common questions.
General information, not tax advice for your situation. Book 15 minutes to talk about yours.
Do you have an office in Oakville?
No. Our office is at 181 Queen St E, Unit 5, Brampton. Oakville clients usually meet us on Teams, and you can visit the Brampton office by appointment.
Should my company have a holding company?
It depends on how much surplus the business keeps, your creditor risk and your plans for the family and the estate. Medical and dental professional corporations have limits on who can own their shares, so the answer differs for them. We go through it with you on a call before anything is set up.
Can you take over from my current accountant mid-year?
Yes. We ask for last year's financial statements, the T2 and the notice of assessment, and pick up the books from your last closed month.
My corporation owns a rental property. What do you need?
The purchase documents, leases, mortgage statements, property tax bills and a list of expenses. We use them for the T2 and to show you how the rental income is taxed.
How are fees set?
After the first call we quote in writing, based on the work your business needs. Nothing starts until you agree.
