MISSISSAUGA AND BRAMPTON
Why Mississauga owners work with a Brampton firm
Mississauga and Brampton sit side by side in Peel Region, and plenty of owners live in one and run their business in the other. Our office is at 181 Queen St E in Brampton. If you would rather meet in person, it is a short drive up Highway 410 from much of Mississauga. Most clients never make the trip: a Teams call, a secure way to share files, and a clear list of what we need covers almost everything.
Mississauga has a different business mix from a typical suburb. Around Pearson airport and the 401 and 407 corridors there are freight, warehousing and distribution companies. Across the city there are head offices, IT and engineering contractors, healthcare professionals working at hospitals and clinics, and a large number of family-run shops and restaurants. Each of those has its own filings. A carrier worries about fuel and cross-border freight. A consultant worries about how CRA sees one long contract. A clinic owner worries about which services carry HST.
What stays the same is the Ontario calendar. Your corporation files a T2 with CRA within six months of its year-end, pays any tax owing earlier than that, and files an Ontario annual return with the Ontario Business Registry. We put every one of those dates on a single schedule so nothing depends on memory.
What we see most often
Growing in Mississauga is the easy part. Keeping the filings in step is where owners get caught.
Four common problems, and what we do about each one.
- The problem
The Ontario annual return gets missed.
Since 2021 it is filed with the Ontario Business Registry, not with the T2, so many owners assume it is already done. Corporations that keep missing filings can face penalties, and in the end Ontario can dissolve them.
The solutionBoth filings on one list
We track the T2 and the Ontario annual return together and confirm each one is filed.
- The problem
Payroll grows past the Employer Health Tax exemption.
Eligible employers pay EHT only on payroll above $1 million a year, so a growing team can cross the line without anyone noticing.
The solutionPayroll watched as you hire
We run payroll and remittances, and flag when your annual payroll is getting close to the exemption.
- The problem
Freight that crosses the border is billed with the wrong HST.
Some freight services that cross the border can be zero-rated, depending on the facts. Charging 13% when you shouldn't, or the reverse, causes trouble in a review.
The solutionHST checked per type of load
We look at how each kind of load is billed and set up invoicing and HST returns to match.
- The problem
One long contract, one client.
IT and engineering contractors who work like an employee for a single client can be treated by CRA as a personal services business, which loses the small business rate.
The solutionA plain contract review
We compare how the work is done with CRA's tests and explain the risk before year-end, not after.
